Moving home? How to make sure your electricity and gas is connected on time

Latest update: August 2025

Moving into a new home is an exciting milestone, but between packing boxes and booking movers, it’s easy to forget about the essential services that make a house liveable - like electricity and gas. Sorting out your energy utilities should be at the top of your moving checklist to ensure your new home is ready from day one.

  • If you don’t organise your energy connection ahead of time, you could face a few headaches:
  • No power or hot water when you arrive at your new place
  • Extra fees for urgent or after-hours meter reads
  • Double billing, if you forget to cancel the service at your old address

Here’s your updated guide to managing energy utilities when moving house in 2025: stress-free.

Before you move

Compare plans for your new address

Jump onto CompareEnergy.com.au and enter your new postcode or suburb. You’ll instantly see which energy retailers and plans are available at your new home.

Tip: Don’t wait until after you move in - if you haven’t chosen a plan, most retailers will automatically assign you to their default (and usually more expensive) plan.

Lock in your preferred plan

Once you find the best deal, let Compare Energy handle the switch. We’ll take care of all the admin, coordinate with the retailer, and ensure power is connected by your move-in day - no paperwork on your end.

Notify us early

We recommend giving us at least 3 business days’ notice to ensure a smooth connection. If you know your move-in date earlier, even better.

Last-minute move? Contact us ASAP. Some providers offer same-day or next-business-day connections (fees may apply).

Use the moving house checklist

About a week before moving, download the Compare Energy Moving House Checklist. It includes everything you need - from energy to broadband setup through our partner, Compare Broadband.

Cancel your old plan

Don’t forget to contact your current energy provider to let them know you’re moving. Give them your move-out date and new mailing address so they can send you the final bill.

Heads-up: Ask your current provider if there are any exit fees, especially if you’re under a fixed-term contract.

On moving day

Read the meters at both homes

Before leaving your old home, take a clear photo of the meter reading and send it to your current energy provider.

Do the same at your new home and send it to your new retailer. Keep both for your records.

This ensures you’re only charged for the energy you actually used - no nasty surprises.

After the move

Once you've received and paid your final bill, confirm with your previous provider that your account is fully closed and no further charges will be issued.
